The NFL and the LA (San Diego) Chargers
The NFL existed as early as 1920s in America but this is not the same NFL that people have now. The NFL that we have now was formed much later when the original NFL merged with its rival league, the AFL. With this merger, the foundation for one of the greatest sports leagues in the world was set up, and here each original league makes up one division on the new NFL. Each division plays to a championship game, with the two champions facing each other in the game referred to as the Super Bowl. From the start, Super Bowl games have consistently been the most viewed sports event in television every year.
There are further divisions with which each NFL division is further broken. The small divisional structure both allows for a strong playoff structure as well as the creation of great divisional rivalries which help boost ticket sales and TV viewership. The NFC and the AFC are the two divisions. Each division is broken down into North South, East, and West sub-divisions.
The NFL schedule season is created so that the teams play the most divisional games. They play many more games within whichever overall division they belong to, the AFC or NFC. There are also a few cross divisional games played each season. Season after season, there are exciting new mist of games for everyone’s favorite teams to play. The great rivalries that have been created within the individual division as part of the reason for the popularity of the game are the Chargers/Raiders rivalry in the AFC West, the Cowboys/Redskins in the NFC East, or the AFC championship rivalry that emerged in this decade between the Colts and the Patriots.
